Electricity shortages in Nigeria could worsen as gas suppliers reportedly threaten to stop supplying fuel to power plants over unpaid debts. The warning was revealed by Dr. Joy Ogaji, CEO of the Association of Power Generation Companies, during an interview on Fresh FM.
Ogaji explained that the country’s unstable electricity supply is largely linked to the huge debt owed to gas suppliers. She said most power stations rely on gas-powered thermal plants, which currently generate only about 3,334 megawatts for the national grid.
According to her, the Federal Government’s debt to electricity generation companies has risen to about N6.8 trillion as of February 2026. She noted that gas suppliers are demanding payment before continuing supply, warning that the shortage of gas is already affecting power production.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the government is working with the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, to resolve the issue. Despite the assurance, many Nigerians are still experiencing frequent blackouts across the country.
