The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted smuggled goods worth over ₦1.018 billion across Kano and Jigawa States between January and March 2026. The Acting Area Controller, Umar Adamu, disclosed this during his first press briefing in Kano, noting that the seizures were made through intelligence-led operations and patrols.
Adamu explained that the operation was part of efforts to curb smuggling, protect the economy, and prevent harmful or unregulated goods from entering the market. He stressed that the command will continue strengthening surveillance along major smuggling routes.
Among the biggest seizures were over 503 cartons of suspected counterfeit Pregabalin capsules worth about ₦729.9 million intercepted at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The drugs reportedly lacked approval from National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.
Other confiscated items included used tyres, smuggled vehicles, silver bars, foreign spaghetti, and undeclared foreign currencies. Suspects linked to the offences have been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other agencies for investigation and possible prosecution.
