Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing in Nnewi staged a protest after their tuition fees were increased from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000. The students gathered at the school gate carrying placards to express anger over what they described as an excessive rise in fees.
The increase reportedly followed a memo issued by O. I. Ezejiofor, who said the review was necessary to improve facilities and maintain standards at the institution. Many students also complained about the rising cost of accommodation around the campus.
Responding to the situation, the Chief Medical Director, Joseph Ugonna, said management would meet with the school board and student representatives to address the concerns. He noted that the institution might reconsider some aspects of the new tuition policy.
Meanwhile, the school’s Public Relations Officer, Chinyere Onwuka, stated that the official student union had distanced itself from the protest. She added that the reviewed fees include feeding and transportation costs and remain lower than those charged by some other nursing schools in the region.
