2027 Electoral Act: Why we’re worried – National Peace Committee

The National Peace Committee has expressed concern over parts of the 2026 Electoral Act recently signed by President Bola Tinubu. Rev. Fr. Atta Barkindo said some important reforms were left out during the amendment process.

He pointed out that the law did not clearly state that elected officials should lose their seats if they defect to another party. According to him, such a rule would promote political stability and accountability.

Barkindo also raised concerns about the funding timeline for INEC, noting that the new law allows funds to be released just six months before elections instead of one year as previously required. He warned this could create logistical challenges.

He further questioned the removal of indirect primaries, saying smaller parties may struggle with the digital registration process required for direct primaries. The committee urged politicians to review the issues before the 2027 elections.
