Saudi Arabia’s largest oil refinery, Ras Tanura, caught fire after being targeted by Iranian drones on Monday. The facility, which processes about 550,000 barrels per day, was shut down as a precaution.
The Saudi Defense Ministry confirmed the drone attack but said the projectiles were intercepted before causing major damage. Operations were halted amid growing tensions in the Middle East.
Reuters reported that Qatar also paused liquefied natural gas (LNG) production, raising concerns over global energy supplies, as the country supplies nearly 20 percent of LNG worldwide.
The strikes follow Iran’s retaliatory attacks on US allies after joint US-Israeli operations that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior officials, heightening fears of a wider regional conflict.
