Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said she may take legal action against Elon Musk after he suggested she had links to drug cartels. Musk made the remark on X while reacting to security developments in Mexico. Sheinbaum described the comment as unacceptable and without proof.

The controversy followed the capture and killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho,” by Mexican security forces. Musk referenced a past video of Sheinbaum discussing cartel violence and accused her of speaking for criminal groups, but offered no evidence.

Speaking during her morning press conference, Sheinbaum confirmed that government lawyers are reviewing the situation. She maintained that her administration is focused on lawful security strategies rather than returning to an aggressive “war on drugs” approach.

She stressed that Mexico is seeking peace and stability, not war, even after violent reactions from cartel members following recent operations. The president expressed confidence that security conditions would continue to improve across the country.
