An armed intruder was shot dead by agents of the United States Secret Service early Sunday after breaching security near Mar-a-Lago, the Florida residence of Donald Trump. Officials said the man entered a restricted area around 1:30 a.m. carrying a shotgun and a gas canister. Trump was reportedly at the White House when the incident occurred.
Local authorities explained that officers confronted the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapons. He reportedly complied partially but then raised the firearm, prompting agents and a deputy to open fire. The man, believed to be in his early 20s, died at the scene, and his identity is being withheld until relatives are notified.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the response, saying security personnel acted swiftly to stop a potential threat. She also criticized lawmakers amid the ongoing funding dispute affecting the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Secret Service.
The incident adds to a series of security scares involving Trump in recent years, including a 2024 rally shooting attempt and another case where a suspect was arrested outside a golf course. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the latest breach.
