FCT Poll: PDP Drags APC To Court After Five-council Sweep

The Peoples Democratic Party has taken legal action against the All Progressives Congress after the ruling party won five out of six chairmanship seats in the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections. The opposition party said it has formed a special legal team to challenge the results, citing alleged irregularities during the polls.

According to results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, APC candidates secured victories in Abuja Municipal, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje councils, while PDP won only in Gwagwalada. The PDP congratulated its winners but insisted the overall outcome did not reflect a fair process.

The party accused security agents and political actors of intimidation, vote-buying and manipulation of result sheets. It also linked low voter turnout to public distrust in the current electoral system, warning that such issues could affect confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections if reforms are not made.

INEC, however, dismissed claims that voters were moved to different polling units, explaining that it only created nearby split units to ease congestion. The commission said about 239,000 voters participated — roughly 15% of registered voters — and noted this was higher than turnout recorded in the previous council elections.
