Enugu State Sets Aside ₦32 Billion For Pensions, Gratuities In 2026 Budget

Labour leaders in Enugu State have praised Governor Peter Mbah after he approved major welfare measures for workers and retirees. The commendation followed a consultative meeting at Government House, Enugu, where union leaders said the talks were practical and solution-focused. The session reportedly ended with spontaneous songs of appreciation from labour representatives.

Officials disclosed that the 2026 budget includes ₦32 billion for pensions and gratuities, covering both current obligations and inherited liabilities. The Head of Service said the governor also approved reviews tied to the new minimum wage and plans to upgrade the Staff Development Centre into a training institute. He noted the decisions show a strong commitment to workers’ welfare and productivity.

The Nigeria Labour Congress chairman described the outcome as unprecedented, saying labour leaders left with clear promises and timelines. He highlighted the approval of a ₦32,000 minimum pension as a major relief for retirees. According to him, arrears had already been cleared earlier, and pensions are now built into the annual budget structure.

Similarly, the Trade Union Congress leadership said the joyful reaction after the meeting reflected genuine satisfaction. Union officials added that improved welfare and timely salaries have raised morale among workers. They believe stronger cooperation between government and labour will sustain productivity and stability across the state.
