FCT Area Council elections: Wike declares Friday work-free day, restricts movement

Ahead of the FCT Area Council elections on Saturday, February 21, Minister Nyesom Wike announced Friday, February 20, as a work-free day to allow residents to travel and participate in the vote. Movement in the FCT will be restricted from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, with security agencies enforcing the order.

Wike urged residents to vote responsibly and exercise their democratic rights, emphasizing the importance of respect for rules, fellow voters, and the election outcome. He called on the electorate to show maturity and decorum at the polls.

The minister also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, highlighting the commitment to fair, transparent, and strengthened democratic processes. He noted that continuous review of the Act will further improve Nigeria’s democracy.

Wike encouraged FCT residents to vote for candidates who will advance development, peace, and prosperity. He emphasized that the elections are a chance to elect quality leaders and build a brighter future for the territory and its citizens.
