FCT dispatch riders protest ‘multiple taxation’

Thousands of dispatch riders in the FCT protested on Thursday at the Administration Secretariat in Abuja against what they described as “multiple taxation.” They called on Minister Nyesom Wike to intervene and stop the alleged extortion.

Riders, represented by Mr. Olawale Ilesanmi, said they have consistently paid taxes to AMAC, Bwari, and Gwagwalada councils but now face an additional N25,000 levy from the FCT Administration. Many motorcycles were reportedly impounded over non-payment.

The protesters argued that the extra tax burden is unlawful and unsustainable, noting they also pay N300 each time they enter markets, which adds up quickly. They demanded an end to the overlapping levies affecting their livelihoods.

The protest was suspended after leaders of the dispatch riders met with officials from the FCT Transportation Secretariat, who promised to address the concerns raised.
