The Peoples Democratic Party has criticised the National Assembly’s approval of amendments to the Electoral Act, calling the decision unfair and harmful to democracy. The opposition party said the move weakens public confidence in elections and ignores citizens’ demand for transparent voting processes.
Party spokesman Ini Ememobong argued that lawmakers reversed earlier support for mandatory electronic transmission of results, describing the action as a betrayal of voters. He said Nigerians had clearly shown they want technology used to protect election credibility.
The PDP insisted the decision by the National Assembly undermines electoral integrity and raises fears about manipulation. According to the party, altering transparency safeguards close to an election period creates suspicion and weakens trust in democratic institutions.
The party also faulted aspects of the revised Electoral Act 2022, including limits on primary election methods, saying such provisions interfere with party independence. It referenced past rulings of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, urging citizens and civil groups to respond through lawful democratic means.
