World Cup: Nigeria awaits outcome as FIFA delays DR Congo verdict

The world football governing body, FIFA, is yet to issue its decision on Nigeria’s eligibility protest against DR Congo following their decisive African playoff encounter.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) formally submitted its petition to FIFA on December 15, 2025, contesting the eligibility of six Congolese players.

According to the NFF, the players had recently switched international allegiance and were ineligible to feature at the time of the match. FIFA has since been reviewing the complaint.

The petition followed Nigeria’s dramatic setback in November 2025, when the Super Eagles suffered a 4–3 penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the final African playoff — a result that derailed the team’s qualification campaign.

As anticipation mounted on Monday, Nigerians awaited FIFA’s ruling, particularly with the Intercontinental Play-Off tournament scheduled to hold in Mexico from March 26 to 31.

Amid widespread speculation and unconfirmed reports regarding the outcome, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau dismissed the circulating claims, stating that the federation has yet to receive official communication from FIFA.

“We are still waiting to hear from FIFA. We are hopeful, by the grace of God,” Gusau said.

Should FIFA rule in Nigeria’s favour, the Super Eagles would secure a place in the Intercontinental Play-Off tournament in March. A successful campaign there would earn Nigeria one of Africa’s remaining slots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Further updates are expected once FIFA communicates its final decision.
