The Ogun State government has explained the reason behind its sharp budget increase for 2026, saying the rise reflects strong economic growth and deliberate reforms. The Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser, Dapo Okubadejo, stated during a media briefing in Abeokuta that the approved ₦1.669 trillion budget shows the state’s improving financial strength and is built on a positive economic trend rather than chance. The spending plan is about 58 percent higher than the 2025 budget of ₦1.054 trillion.
According to him, the expansion is tied to policies introduced by Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to attract investors and strengthen the business climate. He explained that improved security, easier land documentation, and streamlined government procedures have encouraged both local and foreign investments. The digitisation of land payments, reforms in obtaining Certificates of Occupancy, and new business-support agencies were highlighted as key steps that boosted confidence in the state’s economy.
Officials also pointed to performance indicators supporting the bigger budget. The Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Olaolu Olabimtan, said the state achieved about 85 percent budget implementation in 2025, which he described as evidence of fiscal discipline and stability. Meanwhile, the Works Commissioner, Ade Akinsanya, revealed that over 1,600 kilometres of roads have already been built, with a target of 2,000 kilometres before the end of the administration. He added that major projects like the Gateway International Airport and its perimeter road are central to ongoing development plans.
Other ministries outlined sector-specific plans funded by the new budget. The transport ministry said it would address congestion and accidents along the Sagamu Expressway through monitoring and enforcement measures. The health ministry announced plans to acquire 20 ambulances, build four new health facilities, and recruit more staff. The housing ministry also disclosed plans to start construction of 1,000 affordable homes in Siun and complete pending projects, describing the budget as a roadmap for sustained growth and improved living standards.
