The Christian Association of Nigeria has clarified that it does not recognize any group operating under the titles “Northern CAN” or “Southern CAN,” stressing that it functions strictly as a single national body. According to the association, its structure only includes zonal, state, Federal Capital Territory, local government, district, and ward units, all coordinated from its national headquarters in Abuja.
The organization warned that anyone presenting themselves as leaders of regional CAN factions is acting outside its constitutional framework. It emphasized that its guiding principle is unity, reflected in its motto, “That they may be one,” and insisted that the public should not engage with individuals or groups claiming authority under unofficial regional labels.
The statement was jointly endorsed by Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, who also leads the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, and Francis Wale Oke, head of the Christian Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria. Both leaders stressed that any continued misuse of the association’s name could lead to legal consequences.
CAN further issued a public disclaimer, urging Nigerians to verify any organization using its acronym before offering support or recognition. It reiterated that only officially recognized branches represent the body, warning that unauthorized use of its identity undermines its credibility and unity.
