The Iran national football team is reportedly discussing plans for an international friendly match with the Nigeria national football team as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Reports indicate the proposed encounter could take place in March, alongside another warm-up fixture Iran hopes to arrange against Costa Rica national football team.
According to information from Iranian media sources, the friendlies are part of a broader strategy by Iran’s football authorities to fine-tune the squad before the global tournament. Such preparatory matches are often used by national teams to test tactics, evaluate players, and build cohesion ahead of major competitions.
Nigeria’s participation, however, is not yet guaranteed. The West African side is currently awaiting a decision from FIFA regarding an eligibility protest connected to their playoff clash with the DR Congo national football team. That match ended in a penalty shootout defeat for Nigeria, and the pending ruling could influence scheduling and commitments.
Iran, meanwhile, already knows its group-stage opponents for the tournament and is expected to face Belgium national football team, Egypt national football team, and New Zealand national football team. The proposed friendlies are seen as key opportunities to prepare for those high-level clashes and sharpen the squad before the World Cup kicks off.
