Nigeria not Lacking In Talent, but Have Poor Leadership – Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has said that Nigeria is rich in talent but continues to struggle because of poor leadership. In a reflective message inspired by watching the Super Bowl, Obi pointed to Nigerian-born and Nigerian-descent players excelling on one of the world’s biggest sports stages as clear proof of what citizens can achieve when given the right support and structure.

He highlighted the achievements of Michael Onwenu of the New England Patriots, Uchenna Nwosu of the Seattle Seahawks, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the Seattle Seahawks’ Offensive Player of the Year, noting that their success was built on discipline, opportunity, and well-organized systems. According to Obi, these same qualities are often missing in Nigeria, forcing many talented citizens to thrive only after leaving the country.

Obi argued that with visionary and competent leadership focused on building strong institutions, investing in people, and creating equal opportunities, Nigeria could unlock its full potential. He stressed that the country’s talents are not limited to sports alone but extend across science, technology, business, education, and other key sectors of development.

Concluding his message with optimism, Obi maintained that Nigeria’s challenge is not a lack of ability but a failure of leadership to nurture and reward excellence. He expressed confidence that once leadership improves, Nigeria will not only compete globally but also emerge as a leading nation. He reaffirmed his belief that a new Nigeria is possible.
