Edo: 21-year-old dispatch rider in police net for gambling with company, customers’ N1.3m

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old dispatch rider, David Ekes, for allegedly gambling away N1.3 million belonging to his company and customers. The incident occurred at Dibecs Industry Limited, Okpella, in Etsako East Local Government Area. Police say Ekes even staged his own kidnapping to hide the loss.

According to ASP Eno Ikoedem, the suspect was reported missing on January 27, 2026, after leaving his quarters on a company motorcycle. He later returned claiming he had been kidnapped by three men and forced to trek through the forest for three days. Police investigation, however, revealed that Ekes had lost the money gambling online and traveled to Abuja before faking the abduction.

The police have confirmed that Ekes confessed to the crime and will be arraigned in court. Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika warned that false distress reports waste security resources and undermine public trust. He also urged youths to gamble responsibly, noting that addiction can lead to criminal behavior.

Authorities emphasized that the arrest should serve as a deterrent to others who might attempt similar deceptive acts. The case highlights the dangers of online gambling and the need for vigilance by companies and families to prevent financial and personal losses.
