Ten inmates at the Old Abeokuta Custodial Centre in Ibara, Ogun State, have been given a fresh chance at education after securing admission into Yewa Central College of Education. The inmates, made up of seven men and three women, will study different courses at the college under a free education arrangement for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The newly admitted students were enrolled in programmes such as English Language/Social Studies, Economics/Social Studies, Political Science/Social Studies, Business Education, Physical and Health Education, Economics/Political Science, and Economics/Computer Science. Their matriculation ceremony was held inside the correctional facility on Friday, marking an important milestone in their rehabilitation journey.
Speaking at the event, the Provost of the college, Dr Mary Bamgbose, congratulated the inmates and encouraged them to maintain good behaviour. She described them as reformed individuals who deserve a second chance and expressed confidence that they would represent the institution positively when they regain their freedom in the future.
One of the inmates, Peter Adike, who spoke on behalf of the students, thanked the authorities for the opportunity and assured them of their commitment to success. However, he pointed out some challenges they face, including limited access to teachers, books, and basic learning materials. Despite these difficulties, he said the inmates remain determined to excel and make everyone proud.
