Manchester City have reportedly begun planning for life after Pep Guardiola, with the club drawing up a three-man shortlist of possible successors. According to a report by the UK Telegraph, there is growing belief within football circles that Guardiola could leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the current season, despite having a contract that runs until 2027.
One of the leading names on City’s shortlist is former Real Madrid midfielder and coach, Xabi Alonso. Alonso has impressed many with his calm leadership style and tactical intelligence, qualities that have made him one of the most sought-after young managers in Europe. City are said to admire his philosophy and believe he could fit seamlessly into their football structure.
Also on the list is former Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca. The Italian tactician is understood to have held talks with Manchester City on two occasions, even while he was still in charge at Stamford Bridge. His close ties to Guardiola’s football ideas and his experience within the City Football Group system reportedly count in his favour.
Completing the shortlist is Como head coach, Cesc Fabregas. The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder has made a strong impression in Serie A, guiding Como to sixth place and keeping them on course for European qualification. While Guardiola has not officially announced any plans to leave, City’s early moves suggest the club is preparing for a possible transition at the top.
