The spokesman for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lere Olayinka, has challenged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to clearly tell Nigerians what it wants from Minister Nyesom Wike. Olayinka made the remark on Monday as workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) resumed work despite plans by the NLC to stage a protest.
The NLC, through its FCT Chairman, Comrade Stephen Knabayi, had earlier directed union members to appear in union attire for a mass protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, 2026. The planned action followed an earlier strike by FCTA workers under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), who downed tools on January 9 over unpaid allowances and other outstanding demands.
However, Olayinka noted that many FCTA and FCDA workers returned to their duty posts after the minister addressed some of their concerns. He recalled that Wike had warned workers who failed to resume work, insisting that the FCT Administration had already taken steps to meet part of their demands.
Reacting on social media, Olayinka mocked the planned protest, pointing out what he described as a contradiction in the NLC’s actions. According to him, it made little sense to mobilise for a protest on behalf of workers who were already at work. He insisted that, sooner or later, the NLC would have to openly explain to Nigerians what exactly it was demanding from Wike and the FCT Administration.
