Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has explained why the military performs better under a democratic system of government. According to him, Nigeria is always more stable and secure when democracy is allowed to thrive, stressing that military rule does more harm than good to the nation.
General Musa made the remarks during an interview on Prime Time on Arise Television, where he said the Nigerian military has accepted its role under civilian authority. He noted that the armed forces have shown maturity by submitting to democratic leadership, adding that this approach has helped the military grow more professional and effective.
The former Chief of Defence Staff said Armed Forces Remembrance Day should remind Nigerians that coups are wrong and must never be encouraged. He warned citizens to completely reject any thoughts of military takeover, stressing that countries that returned to military rule are struggling, while democracy remains the better option.
General Musa called on Nigerians to continue supporting democratic values and institutions. He stressed that everyone has a role to play in sustaining peace and security, adding that protecting democracy is key to building a united, safe, and prosperous Nigeria for all citizens.
