Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has revealed that Nigeria are really missing defender Ola Aina at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Speaking ahead of the team’s next match, Iwobi said Aina’s absence has been felt both on the pitch and in the dressing room because of his experience, leadership and quality.
Aina was initially named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the tournament but was later dropped from the final list over concerns about his fitness. The Nottingham Forest defender had been sidelined for months with a hamstring injury but has now returned to action, playing in Forest’s last two Premier League games after fully recovering.
Despite missing Aina, Iwobi praised the current right-backs in the squad, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ryan Alebiosu, for stepping up in his absence. He said both players have performed well and given the team balance, making it easier to cope without one of their most reliable defenders from recent tournaments.
Iwobi added that Aina remains an important part of the team’s spirit, even while away. He said the defender has been in constant contact, encouraging the players and wishing them success. According to Iwobi, although Aina is not physically with the squad, his presence is still felt through his support and friendship with the players.
