Niger frees former oil minister nearly one year in detention

Niger’s former Minister of Petroleum, Mahaman Moustapha Barke, has been released after spending almost one year in detention under the country’s military government. Family members and close associates confirmed that Barke regained his freedom on Tuesday, although officials have not issued any public statement about his release.

Barke was appointed oil minister in 2023 shortly after the military took power in a coup. He was later arrested under unclear circumstances, and the authorities never explained why he was detained. His prolonged detention attracted concern from human rights groups and political observers inside and outside Niger.

Rights organisations have repeatedly accused the military government of repressing political opponents, journalists and critics since taking over power. Barke’s release comes at a time when the junta is under growing pressure to show respect for basic rights and due process.

Meanwhile, the government has announced Hamadou Tinni as the new Minister of Petroleum, replacing Sahabi Oumarou, who took over the role in 2024 after Barke was removed. The authorities have not said whether Barke will face any charges or if his case is now fully closed.
