Utilize health benefits of fasting beyond religious obligation – Cleric to Muslim faithful

A respected Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abdulfatai Raji As-Thaqofy, has encouraged Muslims to look at fasting not only as a religious duty but also as a way to improve their health. He gave this advice during the 2026 Ramadan Lecture organized by the Ogun State chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) in Abeokuta.

Speaking on the topic “Fasting Beyond Hunger,” the cleric explained that fasting carries both spiritual and physical benefits. He noted that while Ramadan fasting is meant to obey Allah, medical experts also recommend fasting in some cases to support recovery and overall well-being.

Sheikh As-Thaqofy reminded Muslims that they are the main beneficiaries of this pillar of Islam and should take it seriously. He stressed that fasting builds discipline, strengthens the body, and promotes self-control beyond just avoiding food and drink.

Other speakers at the event also highlighted the importance of integrity and compassion during economic hardship. They said Ramadan teaches resilience, righteousness, and moral responsibility, urging Nigerians to remain honest and hopeful despite inflation and financial pressure.
