China warns Somaliland after Israel recognition

China has issued a warning to Somaliland following reports that the self-declared republic has moved to recognise Israel. Beijing said the decision could affect Somaliland’s international relationships and urged leaders in the region to act carefully.

Chinese officials stressed their support for the “One China” policy and the principle of territorial integrity, warning that diplomatic actions that go against international consensus can bring political consequences. They encouraged Somaliland to consider the broader impact of its foreign policy choices.

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but is not widely recognised, has been seeking international partners to strengthen its economy and security. Its reported decision to recognise Israel is seen as part of efforts to gain wider diplomatic attention and support.

The development has added a new layer to regional and global diplomacy, as major powers react to Somaliland’s outreach strategy. Analysts say the situation shows how smaller states can become involved in bigger geopolitical rivalries through their foreign policy decisions.
