Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have asked the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the new tax laws over claims that the final versions were altered from what was originally approved. They said the alleged changes raise legal and constitutional concerns.
According to them, laws passed by the National Assembly must reflect exactly what was debated and voted on, without later modifications. They warned that any changes made outside the proper legislative process could weaken public trust and create legal confusion for businesses and citizens.
The NBA stressed that the rule of law must be respected at all times, especially on sensitive issues like taxation that affect the economy and daily life. It urged the government to release the official versions of the laws and clarify how the alleged alterations occurred.
Atiku also called for transparency, saying the government should pause enforcement of the new tax rules until the matter is fully addressed. He added that open dialogue and proper review would help avoid court cases and ensure that any tax reforms are fair and lawful.
