ICPC reveals systemic flaws in Nigeria’s contract system, urges legislative action

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has revealed serious weaknesses in Nigeria’s public contract system. The agency said these problems allow corruption, project abandonment, and waste of public funds to continue unchecked across many government institutions.

According to the ICPC, gaps in procurement rules, poor monitoring, and weak enforcement have made it easy for contracts to be inflated or poorly executed. The commission noted that in many cases, projects are awarded without proper planning, while oversight mechanisms fail to ensure value for money.

The anti-corruption body has therefore called on the National Assembly to take urgent action. It urged lawmakers to review existing procurement laws and introduce stronger measures that will improve transparency, accountability, and punishment for offenders in the contract process.

ICPC stressed that fixing the contract system is key to national development. The commission warned that unless legislative reforms are carried out, Nigeria will continue to lose billions of naira to poorly managed and corrupt contract practices.
