Troops arrest two herders for criminal trespass in Makurdi

Troops operating in Makurdi, Benue State, have arrested two herders for criminal trespass after they were found grazing their cattle on restricted farmlands. According to security sources, the herders entered the area without permission, causing damage to crops and creating tension among local farmers.

Officials said the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to reduce conflicts between farmers and herders in Benue, a state that has seen repeated clashes over land use. The troops acted after receiving complaints from residents who reported strange cattle movements around their farms. The quick response helped prevent a possible confrontation.

The suspects are currently being interrogated to determine whether they acted alone or are part of a larger group involved in similar activities. Authorities noted that strict enforcement of anti-open grazing laws is necessary to protect farmlands and promote peaceful coexistence between communities.

Security agencies have urged both farmers and herders to follow established laws and avoid actions that could lead to violence. They stressed that continued patrols and community reporting will help maintain peace and prevent further disputes in Makurdi and its surrounding areas.
