Power blackout: Disco debunks Imo govt’s sabotage allegation as row deepens

The Distribution Company (Disco) responsible for supplying electricity to Imo State has firmly denied the state government’s allegation of sabotage that allegedly led to the recent power blackout. According to the company, the claims are baseless and misleading, stressing that the outage was caused by technical faults and operational challenges, not deliberate actions. Disco officials said they remain committed to providing stable power to residents.

The company explained that ageing equipment, system overload and persistent vandalism in certain areas have contributed to the ongoing electricity problems. Disco noted that these issues are widespread across multiple states and should not be interpreted as targeted sabotage. They also criticised the government for making public accusations without first seeking clarification or reviewing the technical reports.

In response, the Imo State Government insisted that the blackout appeared suspicious and accused the Disco of intentionally withholding power. The government argued that the timing of the outage, particularly during important state events, made the situation questionable. They called for a full investigation to determine whether there were internal actors working against the state’s interest.

As the disagreement between the two sides intensifies, residents remain stuck in prolonged darkness and are calling for a quick resolution. Civil groups have urged both parties to stop trading blame and work together to restore power. Many believe the ongoing row shows the need for better communication and stronger systems to protect public infrastructure from breakdowns.
