President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to ensure that the ongoing directive to withdraw police officers from VIP security duties is applied fairly and without favoritism. According to concerned groups and analysts, the government must make sure the policy is implemented across all sectors, including politicians, business leaders, and influential individuals, to prevent abuse or selective enforcement.
Critics argue that in the past, similar orders failed because only a few people were affected, while many powerful individuals continued enjoying large numbers of police escorts. They warned that if the current directive is not enforced uniformly, it could weaken public trust and defeat the purpose of freeing up officers for regular policing duties across the country.
Security experts also pointed out that Nigeria needs more police officers on public duty to tackle rising crime rates. They stressed that withdrawing officers from VIPs is necessary, but only effective when carried out transparently. According to them, the government should publish clear guidelines and timelines to show the public that the implementation is sincere.
The call for fair execution comes as many Nigerians express hope that the policy will improve security nationwide. Observers say this is a chance for the government to demonstrate accountability by ensuring that no individual, regardless of status, is exempt from the new rules. They urged the presidency to monitor compliance closely and penalize anyone who attempts to undermine the directive.
