Arresting citizens for facebook posts violates digital rights – CITAD

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has condemned the arrest of Nigerians over comments made on Facebook and other social media platforms. According to the group, such actions break digital rights and go against democratic principles.

CITAD explained that citizens have the right to express their opinions online without fear, as long as they are not spreading hate or threats. The organisation urged security agencies to respect freedom of expression and follow the law when dealing with online activity.

They also called on government bodies to support digital rights education, noting that social media has become an important platform for public engagement and holding leaders accountable.

CITAD appealed to Nigerians to use social media responsibly, while insisting that criticism or online opinions should not lead to arrests or intimidation.
