Public affairs analyst Mahdi Shehu has strongly criticised U.S. President Donald Trump over his recent comments about defending Christians in Nigeria. According to Shehu, Trump’s remarks are hypocritical, considering the level of violence in the United States.
In a post on X on Monday night, Shehu argued that Trump has been unable to stop killings in his own country, yet he is threatening intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians. He pointed out that gun violence in the U.S. leads to hundreds of deaths weekly, many of them Christians.
Shehu quoted the Bible verse, “Physician, heal thyself,” to challenge Trump to first address America’s internal security issues. He cited statistics showing that an estimated 125 people are killed daily through gun violence in the U.S., while over 300 are shot daily. According to data he referenced, more than 45,000 Americans — mostly Christians — die from gun violence each year.
He further accused Trump of accepting a one-sided version of events in Nigeria and suggested that his interest may be more about gaining access to Nigeria’s mineral resources than protecting religious freedom.
Shehu warned that such narratives could lead to unnecessary conflict and harm innocent Nigerians if not addressed with balance and fairness.
