The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has appointed CP Abayomi Shogunle, PhD, to oversee security for the upcoming November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.
The announcement was made in a statement by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command.
According to the Police Command, CP Shogunle has officially assumed duty and activated a strict security blueprint to ensure a peaceful and credible election. He has introduced measures to enforce zero tolerance for vote buying, ballot snatching, voter intimidation, and political thuggery.
The police confirmed that over 60,000 security personnel from different agencies under ICCES will be deployed across the 5,720 polling units, boundary points, and collation centres. A real-time intelligence and rapid-response system has also been set up to strengthen monitoring and quick intervention during the election.
CP Shogunle also announced a ban on vigilante groups—such as Agunechemba—from any election duties, stating that only federal security agencies are permitted to secure the election. He warned that VIPs will not be allowed to move with armed escorts to polling or collation centres, and violators will be arrested and prosecuted.
He further directed that only INEC staff, accredited observers, and journalists may move freely between election areas.
