Former spokesman to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has said it is now evident that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), does not want his trial to be resolved in court. Akande made the remarks on Monday via a video shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page, where he called for a political solution to the ongoing case.
This follows Kanu’s decision to disengage his lawyers and express readiness to defend himself before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. However, during Monday’s court sitting, Kanu made a U-turn, claiming that the Federal Government had no valid charges against him.
Reacting to the development, Akande said both sides — Kanu and the Federal Government — have mishandled the case. He noted that while Kanu deserves a fair and speedy trial, his recent actions show he is not genuinely interested in resolving the matter legally. “First, it was claimed his health couldn’t allow the trial, but doctors confirmed he’s fit. Then he said he would defend himself. It’s becoming obvious he doesn’t want this sorted out in court,” Akande said.
He advised that a political settlement should be considered but insisted that any compromise must include Kanu taking responsibility for his past actions. “A political solution should take into account his past deeds. He should apologize for them. That would be a noble path rather than trying to drag certain politically exposed people into his defence,” Akande added.
The former presidential aide concluded by urging the Federal Government to be open to dialogue if Kanu shows genuine remorse. “If he’s ready to apologize, then the Federal Government should welcome a political compromise,” he stated.
