4 confirmed dead as Cameroon boils over 92-year-old Biya’s re-election as president

At least four people have been confirmed dead in Cameroon after violent clashes erupted between supporters of the opposition and security forces following the re-election of 92-year-old President Paul Biya. The unrest broke out shortly after the country’s Constitutional Council declared Biya the winner of the 2025 presidential election.

According to official results, Biya — who has been in power for over 43 years — secured 53.66% of the votes, while his main rival, Issa Tchiroma, garnered 35.19%. The announcement sparked outrage among opposition supporters, many of whom claimed the election was rigged in favor of the long-time leader.

Before the official results were released, Tchiroma had already declared himself the winner, urging his supporters to reject what he described as a “stolen mandate.” His statement led to widespread protests across several cities, particularly in Douala, Cameroon’s largest city, where demonstrators reportedly attacked police stations and a gendarmerie brigade.

Regional Governor Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua confirmed the fatalities, saying, “Four people unfortunately lost their lives, and several members of the security forces were injured.” He added that calm was being restored, though the situation remained tense and volatile in some parts of the city.

Observers have described the unrest as a sign of growing frustration over Biya’s long rule, with critics calling for democratic reforms and younger leadership. The recent violence underscores the deep political divisions in the Central African nation as citizens continue to express fatigue over decades of the same administration.
