FRSC Set To Roll Out Digital Driver’s Licences In Nigeria

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to introduce a fully digital driver’s licence system featuring contactless biometric capture and instant licence printing. This major innovation aims to eliminate the use of temporary licences and make the entire process faster and more efficient for Nigerians.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, revealed this during a press briefing in Abuja while launching the 2025 ember months safety campaign. He explained that the new system would serve as a “one-stop digital process” for obtaining licences, reducing waiting times and ending long-standing delays that have affected motorists nationwide.

According to Mohammed, the FRSC has already boosted its daily licence production to 15,000 and plans to clear all pending applications by November 2025. Out of 800,000 backlogged licences, 400,000 have been printed while 206,000 remain uncollected. He urged applicants to visit their designated centres to claim their licences and enjoy faster service under the new system.

The FRSC boss added that the contactless biometric technology will strengthen data integrity, improve operational efficiency, and modernise the corps’ services. This move follows earlier digital upgrades, including the establishment of a mini licence printing farm in Lagos, which can produce 9,000 licences within six hours.

The introduction of the new digital process comes after the Joint Tax Board approved a new price structure for driver’s licences in June 2025. The updated costs include ₦15,000 for a three-year licence and ₦21,000 for a five-year licence, while tricycle drivers will pay ₦7,000 and ₦11,000 respectively.
