Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has reportedly been flown to the United Kingdom for medical treatment. According to reliable sources who spoke with The West Post on Tuesday, the minister left the country following health concerns that required urgent attention abroad.
This development comes just days after presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, denied earlier media reports claiming that the minister had been flown out for treatment. At the time, Onanuga confirmed that Edun was indeed unwell but insisted he was being treated in Nigeria. However, the latest information suggests the minister’s condition may have required more advanced medical care overseas.
In Edun’s absence, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, has been appointed to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the ongoing World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings in Washington, D.C. The meetings are crucial for discussions on economic reforms, debt management, and development financing for Nigeria and other participating nations.
Wale Edun, a key figure in President Bola Tinubu’s economic team, has been central to the administration’s fiscal and monetary reform policies. His absence raises concerns about potential slowdowns in the ongoing economic restructuring and policy coordination between the finance ministry and the CBN.
While no official statement has been released on the exact nature of Edun’s illness, government sources maintain that his condition is stable and that he is expected to return to work once he recovers. Nigerians have since expressed mixed reactions, with some wishing him a speedy recovery while others criticized the government for continuing the trend of seeking medical care abroad.
