Former Statistician-General of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Yemi Kale, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening poverty rate. He revealed that the country now ranks as the second-highest in the world with the largest number of poor people. Kale said this reflects the urgent need for stronger policies that address unemployment, inflation, and slow economic growth.
Despite Nigeria’s huge resources, millions of citizens still struggle to survive on very little. Rising food prices, poor healthcare, and lack of access to quality education have continued to worsen the living conditions of many families. For many Nigerians, meeting daily needs has become increasingly difficult.
Kale urged the government to focus on job creation, economic diversification, and poverty reduction. He stressed that only deliberate and consistent reforms can help lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty and improve their standard of living in the years to come.
