Lagos: 18 arrested as violence erupts over power outage at Tejuosho Market

Normalcy has returned to Tejuosho Market Phase II in Surulere, Lagos, after police moved in to stop violent clashes sparked by a power outage.

According to the Lagos State Police Command, the unrest was allegedly led by hoodlums who disguised themselves as protesters. During the chaos, sections of a commercial bank within the market were vandalised, and policemen on duty came under attack.

Police Prevent Bank Invasion

Operatives of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) swiftly intervened, preventing the mob from breaking into the bank and the nearby Market Police Post. Despite provocation, the police said its officers showed “commendable restraint” while dispersing the attackers.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babasuyi B. Oluseyi, confirmed in a statement that 18 suspects were arrested during the incident.

He explained:

“On September 18, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., hoodlums began attacking traders, damaging goods, and destroying property at Tejuosho Market. They later attempted to attack policemen guarding a bank, but the officers firmly resisted them.”

Normalcy Restored

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, immediately deployed tactical squads and other operatives to the scene, restoring calm and allowing trading activities to resume.

Police have assured that investigations are ongoing to track down other suspects involved in the violence. CP Jimoh also warned that attacks on security personnel and destruction of property will not be tolerated, adding that those arrested will face prosecution.
