Tinubu’s Next INEC Chairman Is A Magnet For Controversies – Kperogi

Reports say President Bola Tinubu may appoint retired Justice Abdullahi Mohammed Liman from Nasarawa State as the next INEC chairman. Liman’s past rulings and controversies have already raised concerns.

Justice Liman was involved in high-profile cases, including stopping Governor Abba Yusuf from reinstating Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano. He also halted Abdullahi Ganduje’s suspension as APC chairman. In 2016, his Port Harcourt home was raided by DSS over alleged funds, which Liman denied.

Political analyst Farooq Kperogi described Liman as a “magnet for controversies.” Buba Galadima warned that appointing him could create chaos and undermine trust in the electoral process. Critics say Liman’s history of politically sensitive rulings makes him a risky choice to lead INEC.

Observers note that the North-Central region has never produced an INEC chairman, which could make Liman a historical appointment. Still, Nigerians expect the INEC chairman to be neutral and independent to protect the credibility of the 2027 elections.

The debate highlights the importance of impartial leadership for Nigeria’s electoral body. Analysts caution that any perceived partisanship could weaken public confidence before the next general elections.
