Zamfara govt appeals for more humanitarian aid for IDPs

The Zamfara State Government has appealed to both local and international humanitarian partners to scale up support for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable families in the state. The call was made by the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Relief Matters, Salisu Musa Tsafe, in a statement released by the ministry’s Director of Information, Bashir Kabir Ahmed, on Thursday.

Tsafe commended development partners for their ongoing interventions but stressed that the scale of displacement in Zamfara required more urgent assistance. According to him, thousands of IDPs from about 1,008 communities across 14 local government areas have been documented in the State Social Register, highlighting the magnitude of the crisis.

He specifically urged organisations such as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Première Urgence Internationale (PUI), and others to expand their interventions in livelihood support, empowerment programmes, and cash transfers. These, he noted, would go a long way in cushioning the hardships faced by displaced persons and helping them rebuild their lives.

Assuring partners of full government support, Tsafe emphasized that Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration had already created the enabling environment and political will necessary for humanitarian actors to operate effectively in Zamfara. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with stakeholders to ensure displaced families receive the relief and empowerment they urgently need.
