A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered that a labourer, Sunday Isong, be kept in prison for allegedly stabbing his neighbour, Friday Dodam, to death during a fight over a torchlight.
The Chief Magistrate, Sunday Adedapo, gave the order on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, after Isong was brought before the court. He was accused of stabbing Dodam with a kitchen knife, which led to his death.
Isong, whose address was not disclosed, is facing a charge of murder.
According to the Police prosecutor, Nelson Akintimehin, the incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. on September 5, at Alagoke via Ala-Elefosan in Akure.
Akintimehin told the court that the 25-year-old Isong stabbed his 24-year-old neighbour, Dodam, in the chest with a kitchen knife. The fight reportedly started because Dodam used his flashlight while Isong was peeling an orange.
The prosecutor said Dodam died on the way to the hospital and was later confirmed dead by a doctor.
The offence, he explained, goes against Section 319 and is punishable under Section 316 of the Criminal Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The court did not take a plea from the defendant. The prosecutor then asked the magistrate to remand him in prison until the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) gives legal advice on the matter.
Without a lawyer, Isong admitted to stabbing Dodam. He claimed he acted out of anger after being provoked by the use of the flashlight.
Magistrate Adedapo said the confession was enough reason to keep him in custody. He ordered the case file to be sent to the DPP and adjourned the case to December 30, 2025, for mention.
