Former Cross River South Senator, Gershom Bassey, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing ongoing internal crises, divisions, and unresolved conflicts. Bassey said he made the decision “with a heavy heart” due to the party’s declining unity and values.
In a resignation letter dated March 12, 2026, Bassey noted that repeated conflicts within the party have weakened its structures and eroded the principles that once united its members. He lamented the lack of effort by party elders to restore discipline and vision.
Bassey described the PDP as drifting away from the ideals that once made it a respected democratic institution, expressing disappointment that it no longer represents the aspirations of millions of Nigerians. He said stepping aside was better than remaining in a party that no longer aligns with his beliefs.
While he did not reveal his next political move, Bassey’s exit comes as the 2027 Cross River governorship election approaches, leaving questions about his future plans and potential alliances.
