Activist/Lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, raises alarm over the poor condition of Nigerian prisoners in Republic of Benin

Lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has warned about the poor treatment of Nigerians in prisons across the Republic of Benin. He says more than 200 Nigerians are reportedly being held in terrible conditions.

In a letter sent to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on September 16, 2025, Adeyanju called the situation “a serious violation of the basic rights of Nigerians.” He explained that many prisoners are being held without proper charges, fair trials, or hearings. He described their treatment as harsh, inhumane, and degrading, going against international human rights rules.

Adeyanju also mentioned that most detainees have no access to lawyers, medical care, or even basic items they need.

The letter highlighted a tragic case: Salami Deyomi from Lagos State recently died because the prison was overcrowded and he could not get medical help.

Adeyanju shared a video online showing the overcrowded and poor conditions inside the prison.
