The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have threatened to go on strike if the federal government does not resolve pending issues affecting non-teaching staff in universities within seven days.
In a letter dated September 12, 2025, both unions criticized what they described as the unfair sharing of earned allowances among university workers, the non-payment of certain allowances, and other long-standing problems.
The letter, which was signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, reminded the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, about a previous letter sent on June 18, 2025, by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the two unions.
According to the unions, that earlier letter made the Minister call for a meeting with JAC on July 4, 2025, to discuss the issues raised.
The unions explained that their main concerns include the unfair distribution of N50 billion earned allowances, the non-payment of withheld salaries, the 25% and 35% salary increases that have not been fully implemented, and the need to review the 2009 agreement signed with the federal government.
They stressed that since their demands remain unresolved, they are giving the government seven days from Monday, September 15, 2025, to take action. If nothing is done, they will begin a series of industrial actions, including strikes, to push for their rights.
