Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, has come out in support of manager Ruben Amorim, saying the Portuguese coach’s tactics are not the problem at Old Trafford.
Instead, Scholes turned his criticism toward the club’s hierarchy, accusing them of focusing on the wrong positions during the summer transfer window. He believes United’s poor start to the season is down to the quality of the players signed, not the system being used by the manager.
Speaking after United’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in Sunday’s derby, Scholes told BBC5 Live that Amorim’s system allowed United to have more possession than City at the Etihad. For him, this shows the team was not completely dominated in midfield, but lacked players with enough ability to make a difference.
The former midfielder argued that United should have made signing a strong central midfielder a priority in the summer. Instead, the club appeared to panic late in the window by bringing in Carlos Baleba without a clear plan. He also questioned why it took a defeat against Grimsby for the club to realize goalkeeper André Onana was not good enough.
Scholes further criticized the decision to sign three new forwards when the real weakness was in midfield. He concluded that United’s recruitment strategy failed to fix the areas that truly needed attention.
