Lawmakers from Kebbi State in the National Assembly have asked for the arrest and trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami. They accused him of causing trouble during his recent visit to Birnin Kebbi.
At a press briefing in Abuja, Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) explained that the caucus was reacting to a petition Malami filed on September 10. In the petition, Malami accused Governor Nasir Idris and others of bringing political thugs, foreign fighters, and hidden weapons into the state.
The lawmakers dismissed Malami’s accusations, calling them “false, baseless, and politically driven,” according to Aliero. They also claimed that thugs who came with Malami attacked the APC state office during his visit, leading to clashes with party members.
These claims are yet to be confirmed, but the caucus insisted they were enough reasons to call on security agencies to investigate and punish anyone guilty of disturbing public peace.
Senator Garuba Musa Maidoki (Kebbi South) challenged Malami to show proof for his allegations. He said the caucus would not accept accusations made without evidence. Maidoki also applauded the federal government’s fight against banditry and asked for stronger cooperation with security agencies.
The group of lawmakers further advised security agencies to focus on real threats, invite Malami to provide evidence for his claims, and take action if any laws were broken.
Finally, the caucus assured Governor Idris of their full support and called for peace and calm across Kebbi State.
