As the 2027 elections get closer, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reminded President Tinubu of his campaign promise that he would not run for a second term if he fails to solve Nigeria’s electricity problems in his first term.
Obi made this reminder on his X account on September 10, after Nigeria experienced yet another collapse of its national power grid.
He criticized the APC and the current government, saying they have overseen more national grid failures and power outages than any previous administration in Nigeria’s history.
Obi highlighted President Tinubu’s campaign words from December 22, 2022: “If I don’t give you constant electricity in the next 4 years, don’t vote for me for a second term.”
For a country with the largest number of people living without electricity in the world, Obi stressed that this promise should not be forgotten by Nigerians.
Despite billions of dollars spent on Nigeria’s power sector, blackouts continue. Obi pointed out that electricity supply has hardly improved, while countries like Vietnam, Egypt, Indonesia, and Bangladesh have made significant progress in generating more power and boosting their economies.
Obi explained that Nigeria, with a GDP of around $200 billion, could grow much faster if it produced more electricity. Generating even 10,000MW could raise the country’s GDP by about 50%, create jobs, and encourage industrial growth.
He noted that the government has focused on building coastal roads, which have less impact on economic growth, while factories shut down, businesses collapse, and ordinary Nigerians continue to live without reliable electricity.
Obi urged President Tinubu to prioritize generating and distributing more electricity, especially to support small and medium businesses, which are vital for creating jobs and strengthening the economy.
He concluded with hope, saying that a New Nigeria is possible if electricity becomes a priority and the government keeps its promise.
