US President Donald Trump spoke to the nation following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kirk was fatally shot on Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University.
In a solemn video message, Trump described the shooter as a “monster” and called the incident a tragic moment for America.
He praised Kirk for his courage, patriotism, and dedication to faith and freedom, while criticizing the political climate that encourages such attacks.
Trump said Kirk inspired millions and that everyone who knew him was in shock. He added that Kirk devoted his life to open debate and defending the country he loved, fighting for liberty, democracy, and justice, making him a martyr for truth and freedom.
Kirk, 31, was answering questions from students on the first stop of his American Comeback Tour when a gunman fired from a rooftop, hitting him in the neck. The attack caused panic among the crowd and left the nation shaken.
Trump, who survived an assassination attempt last year, linked Kirk’s death to growing political violence in the country. He warned that harmful rhetoric can lead to deadly consequences and blamed years of demonization of conservatives by political opponents and the media.
He stressed that it is time for Americans and the media to face the fact that constant attacks on those with differing views can result in violence.
Despite the tragedy, Trump said Kirk’s mission would continue. “A gunman tried to silence him, but he failed. Together, we will make sure his voice, his message, and his legacy live on for generations. Today, Charlie’s voice is bigger and stronger than ever.”
